O Brasil virou o (2) maior fã do Facebook

Facebook's growth in Brazil has surpassed expectations.

Brazil becomes Facebook’s (second) Biggest Fan

Everyone knows that America is Facebook’s best friend, but who’s next? Well, according to a new report, it’s now Brazil. The world’s largest social network has over 46 million Brazilian users, 22% more than it had 3 months ago and enough to leapfrog India into second place.

Brazil, as well as other emerging markets like Mexico and Indonesia, is critical to the continuing growth of the Zuckerberg-led giant. If Facebook is to hit 1 billion active users by August, they’ll need to take advantage of ‘engaged’ users like those in Brazil, who spent an average of 285 minutes on the network, in December 2011; up 667% year on year (comScore).

This stratospheric increase in use is explained by the ever-increasing number of online, digitally-aware Brazilians, a demographic we’ve written about in previous blogs. If you’re looking to optimise your online efficiency in Brazil, get in touch with Ve Interactive’s Sao Paulo office.

Industry Effects & Organizational Success

History is infamous for repeating itself. As a data-driven company specializing in technology and marketing, it is our place to not only be aware of, but also prepared for future expectations in our industry.

An article on Forbes yesterday got us to thinking about the realistic future for successful companies like Facebook and Google. It goes without saying that they are dominant, disruptive, and innovative. But when we step back and drill down, what is in store for their future?

Every organization experiences industry effects and when changes take place that disrupt the inherent operations of an organization, they face the decision of adaptation or attempted endurance. The question then is whether the end success of an organization is truly determined by the outcome of strategies and performance of executive management, or rather these unpredictable industry effects that can create a liability of obsolescence? This liability can be best defined as an increasing mismatch between an organization’s original product strategy and its operating environment over time.

In order to start answering this question, we must look forward to the long-term viability of an organization, which can be arguably best assessed based on when it was born. Identifying which generation an organization was founded will offer key insight into perception and attitudes of executive leadership. To this point, let’s consider the patterns of the past 3 generations in the tech world:

1. Web 1.0 (1994-2001)
You might best relate this age to the beginning of companies such as Google, Amazon, eBay, AOL and Yahoo. These players did an exceptional job of aggregating data and translating it in a simple fashion. For example, Amazon created a centralized space for all e-commerce shopping.

2. Web 2.0 (2002-2009)
We can all resonate with the seven years that saw the creation of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Groupon. These companies revolutionized the way we communicate. They introduced us to a world where two people separated by distance can stay in touch like next door neighbors.

3. Web 3.0 (2010 – Present)
The generation we’re in is and will continue to be all about mobile, with websites optimizing their data accordingly. This trend is a slight shift for organizational processes, and will continue to test the success of organizations with growing challenges.

With each new generation comes a new paradigm that the prior was unable to adapt and ultimately adopt. Whether the real success of companies is a result of management or inevitable industry alterations, it is important to understand the potential for sudden change, and, if necessary, to assume the responsibility of rearranging operations.

Some organizations today are actively trying to defy that truth by integrating social media as an afterthought, but only time will tell which can outlast the ever-changing industry effects.

Do you know any other examples of generation behavior based on industry effects?

Mind the gap

Mind the gapA generation gap is the point when two age groups begin to see the world from significantly different perspectives. And it’s never been more accelerated than now in the twenty-first century, when even ten years can bring radical changes in technology. Combine this with longer life expectancy and more generations are living and working simultaneously, while having to negotiate each others’ psycho-social quirks!

Generation Y was the first generation to have digital in their DNA. They were the first to create a social profile online. Their elders meanwhile looked on in horror. But now digital footprints start before a child can even walk! Did you know that 81 percent of children under the age of two already have a digital profile and even 23 percent of sonograms are being actively published and shared! (And if you think online privacy is a minefield, just wait for the genome privacy debates!)

But whether you’re a Baby Boomer, a Generation X-er, Y-er or a Millennial, one thing’s for sure; we’re all ‘connected customers’ now. So may be age just is a number after all? It seems we’re multi-taskers too; checking email, surfing the web, playing around on apps, texting friends, or visiting social networking sites and shopping – all while watching TV! In fact we’ve become Moppers, or mobile shoppers. And as we’ve discussed before, retailers, credit card companies, banks and telecoms companies are all coming up with innovative ways to access our wallets. (MCommerce already accounts for 9.1 percent of all ecommerce sales in the UK).

However, according to Affilinet, incredibly 85 percent of companies lack a mobile app strategy and 67 percent have still to optimize their sites for mobile browsing. Which means that they are not able to reach potential customers at all stages of the decision making process! We raised this flag yesterday and are reiterating it again today.

If this is you, we can help. VeServices’ dedicated mobile-development team can get you mobile-ready in no time. We offer proven capabilities and expertise across apps, mobile websites and optimisation.

13 Reasons why Mobile is a Must

M-commerce is an e-commerce must!If your business is dependent on its digital presence, it would be advisable to develop an optimised mobile capability. 70% of smartphone owners have bought or browsed products on their devices, while tablet users are spending, on average, 20% more than those using laptops or desktop and are twice as likely to make a purchase. Plus, mobile’s share of total website visits has quadrupled, in the last year, and looks set to increase exponentially.

Here are 13 more compelling stats to persuade you to go mobile (courtesy of Econsultancy and iStrategy):

1. 15% of UK search happens on a mobile device, three years ago that figure was down at 2%

2. Mobile accounts for 10% of e-commerce

3. As far as average order values are concerned, the iPad is king, with an AOV of £69.94, compared to £65 for non-mobile.

4. 48% of users start their search on a mobile device, before finishing on a desktop

5. In the USA, 1 in 4 payments made in a Starbucks is completed with a mobile device

6. Smartphones are no longer a luxury item. In the USA, the majority (56%) of young people on minimum wage own a smartphone

7. 1 in 3 people would rather give up sex than their mobile

8. In the UK there are currently 17 million mobile internet users

9. By 2015, there are expected to be 23 million mobile internet users in the UK – more than 1/3 of the entire population

10. In Q4 2010 there were more smartphones shipped than desktop PCs

11. In Q4 2011 Apple sold more iPads than any individual PC maker sold PCs

12. In August 2011, the average conversion rate for iPads was 3.82%, compared to 1.9% for non-mobile.

13. 15 billion iOS apps have been downloaded from iTunes

VeServices’ dedicated mobile-development team can get you mobile-ready in no time. We offer proven capabilities and expertise across apps, mobile websites and optimisation. O Boom brasileiro!

Brazilian boom!

Talk about the country to watch! Did you know Brazilian consumers viewed more than 8.3 billion pages of Retail content in Q4 2011, up 14 percent on the previous year? And did you also know that the most engaging online retail destination was MercadoLivre, where visitors averaged nearly 20 minutes on the site in December, consuming 36 pages of content?

However electronic appliances is actually the biggest online sector in Brazil, followed by computers, then electronics, with fashion and accessories following in line next. Cultural reasons probably explain this, because there is still the preference for trying on before buying, however just as it has in other countries, this may soon change. And especially because Brazil’s federal government is set to launch a national plan aimed at providing cheap broadband Internet access across the country, which would substantially expand Brazil’s online population, (currently 78 million of the country’s 196 million). Mobile shopping is also expected to grow rapidly in the near future, it is estimated that a least half of the country’s population will own a smartphone by 2015.

Meanwhile Facebook has toppled Google as the most visited site in Brazil, with 11 percent of all Internet traffic choosing it as its preferred online destination.

So watch this exciting space. We are! And our fab data-driven services team in our Sao Paulo office is on standby to help if you want to know more!

4 Powerfully Productive Professional Habits

This isn’t the first time we’ve chimed in on what it takes to be successful in the work place. In fact, in February we explained the importance of creating value through strong leadership.

Just like proper eating and exercise are critical to physical health, emotional intelligence is essential in attaining collective respect and personal power in the work place. The only problem is that sometimes productivity manuals just can’t cover everything at once.

That’s why instead of telling you how to live, we decided it would be helpful to introduce four fundamental habits that can spark your interest – and hopefully help you develop better habits. Obviously it’s not expected that you adopt all of these traits, but being aware of them can only benefit your professional productivity.

1. Thick Skin

Whether you’re an entry-level employee or the CEO of an international company, you have to stay strong in every situation that presents itself. It’s human nature to be sensitive and perceptive, but it’s emotionally intelligent to turn that insecurity into a powerful tool to display your heightened intellect. If you are in an unfair situation and allow others to see it’s impact on you, you have not only proved yourself a weak person, but you’ve let the peanut gallery prevail. Remember that sensitivity is an asset – don’t beat yourself up over your feelings, just learn how to control them and flaunt your self-will.

2. Reliable

It’s one thing to make a mistake, but entirely dissimilar to purposely ignore an assignment. The truth is no one wants an employee with selective hearing and doing. If you read an email that requires a response, reply right away. The sooner you conquer tasks at hand, the better habits you will develop. Every successful employee experiences a lot of important responsibilities at once. Only successful employees recognize that every human is important. If you’re aware of that, then you can accomplish amazing things.

3. Prioritize

Regardless of which industry you’re in, if you’re not able to be at least somewhat selfish, you’ll never survive. That said, there are lines to be drawn. There is a difference between taking care of yourself while balancing your priorities and expecting others to look out for you. No job is important enough to destroy yourself to succeed, so understand there is life out of work and plan your career path accordingly.

4. Confidence

Have you ever heard the saying “you can’t love someone else until you love yourself”? Well, the same holds true with successful leadership. It’s impossible to expect others to believe in you if you don’t even believe in yourself. Therefore, the first step in your success is good ‘ol fashion blind faith. Of course it’s natural to question yourself, your assumptions and your expectations, but once you have convinced others that you’re worth their time (and money), you can climb up the corporate ladder.

So what do these four great traits really mean? Good work doesn’t speak for itself. If you want to be incredibly good at what you do, you have to make it happen. Don’t sit around and wait to be noticed, promoted or elected, show people why they wouldn’t want it any other way.

Do you know any other powerfully productive practices? Let us know!
