Ve Interactive London went to The Hospital today! No not the emergency room, luckily the rather plush members club in Covent Garden where (even luckier), Like Minds were holding their inaugural Business Book Club breakfast, and hosting the US author of Making Ideas Happen, Scott Belsky. We breakfasted on bacon butties, washed down with pots of coffee and then Scott proceeded with his own food for thought. And we so enjoyed and agreed with what he had to say! And he said it really well too. Which is probably why he’s become such a successful business man and author.
You see – creativity comes hand in hand with the digital space that we’re in. It’s all about pioneering new ideas, new technologies, new strategies to keep a pace of technological change and to cope with the incessant stream of data, whilst being accountable and providing ROI. And Scott reiterated something that we have a tendency to get on our orange box about here; that success is not based on an ideas meritocracy, it’s actually strategic and organised execution which separates the clever ideas that go on to make it, from the dreams that fall by the way side. Many creatives fail to recognise that indulging in ideas actually just leaves 48 percent of us feeling horribly disorganised and that’s when the fulfillment of the ideas, (however clever they are in principle), can plateau and fail.
Refining the logistics of making an idea happen is therefore key. As is overcoming a reactionary work flow, aka chipping away at all the inboxes of our lives, to instead be proactive and systematic in our approach. So the audience loved Scott’s idea of finding ‘sacred’ space. Those minutes or hours in the day which you can carve out for thinking time. With Smartphones and the ALWAYS-ON zeitgeist, precious thinking time these days is becoming reduced to the time spent in the shower. (Do not buy a shower media-centre!) In other words, it’s about creating windows of non-stimulation for ourselves, so that instead of being glued to tablets and smart phones, we carve out some of that energy instead to process thoughts and get organised.
He had lots more to say, you should really consider buying his book. Or watch this space for a few more gems.
And finally we’re ending the week on a high here. It’s been good one; working with some great new clients, some more fab testimonials have come in, the sun finally came out, we’ve had two excuses for team birthday cakes, our wonderful client Richie (you know who you are) became a Daddy to a bouncing baby girl at 9 am on Wednesday morning, (redefinining his definition of pulling an all-nighter!) and today we launched Ve Interactive’s exciting TECH AID programme. Happy days. Busy times!
